The Queen of Spain

Writer-director of the 1994 Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film (Belle Epoque), Fernando Trueba brings together an all-star cast for a lavish homage to 1950s Spanish cinema.

After becoming a Hollywood star, the sultry Macarena Granada (Penélope Cruz) returns to Madrid to film a sweeping, big-budget Hollywood costume drama on the life of Queen Isabella. When the director of her previous film, Blas Fontiveros (Antonio Resines), is arrested and sentenced to work in a labour gang building Franco’s stone cross monument, Granada and her crew hatch a foolhardy plan to rescue him.

Featuring beloved musical stalwart Mandy Patinkin and Cary Elwes (both from The Princess Bride) and renowned star of stage and screen Clive Revill (Robin Hood: Men in Tights), The Queen of Spain is an artful rendering of breathtaking costumes, rich visuals and madcap fun, unpredictably melding Hollywood’s studio system of the 1950s with that of fascist-era Spain.
